The Rabbi Cyril Harris Community Centre (RCHCC) are inviting community members to the launch of a new book, The Mistress’s Dog, which is an exciting new collection of short stories by award-winning Jewish South African writer David Medalie.
The book will be introduced by Medalie’s fellow-Professor Eugenie Freed-Isserow.
“The Mistress’s Dog is an exciting new short story collection by Medalie, an award-winning writer of short stories and a novel. Deft, subtle and nuanced, these stories show an accomplished and mature writer at his best. Their focus is the lived experience of people: ostensibly uneventful lives into which the unexpected erupts.
The stories find significance in the reversals, ironies and coincidences of existence. They bring the characters – and the reader – to the brink of recognition.
WHO IS DAVID MEDALIE?
Medalie is a professor in the Department of English at the University of Pretoria. His research interests include early twentieth century literature and South African literature. He is a novelist, short story writer and anthologist. The Mistress’ Dog is his second collection of short stories.
Two of the stories included in the collection have won awards: “Recognition” won the Sanlam Literary Award (in the unpublished category) in 1996 and “The Mistress’s Dog” won the Thomas Pringle Award for short stories in 2008.
Reviewer Elleke Boehmer wrote: "The emotional subtlety and structural suppleness of Medalie's writing are breathtaking… His insights catch the heart and transform the pallor of the everyday."
Autographed copies will be available at the launch which takes place at the RCHCC on Sunday morning 23 May at 10.30am. A donation of R50 is required which includes refreshments.
