It is one of the most hotly anticipated dates in the communal social calendar. The WIZO AVIV Shaffa Bride of the Year function! "Bride of the Year has become a very effective and positive way for WIZO to attract new, young membership as well as start branches with dynamic, committed ladies," an AVIV Shaffa spokesperson told MyShtetl.co.za this week.
"We are emphatic that contestants know that this is not a competition based on physical attributes but on commitment to working for WIZO which is one of the most eminent women's organisations," she said.
An Incredible Function
The winner will be crowned this Sunday night at a function that will include comedians Al Prodgers and Don Packett as well as other entertainment. The evening is not just about lovely brides and entertainment but is also one of the most prestigious of WIZO Johannesburg's fundraisers. This year, beneficiaries will include WIZO South Africa's Neve WIZO project in Israel and the Estee lauder Breast cancer Awareness Initiative.
Beneficiary One: Neve WIZO
Neve WIZO is an amazing project in the heart of Israel that provides a loving, stable home to children who have been removed from their homes by court order. In most cases their parents are unable to take care of them and they are sent to Neve WIZO. This project consists of four houses, each with a set of foster parents that take in children from birth up until 18.
These children are given all the love and everything children need to maintain a healthy and stable environment. WIZO provides social workers and therapists who are on hand to help with any psychological issues that should surface.
Beneficiary Two: Estee Lauder Breast
The funds that Estee Lauder Breast raises in South Africa go towards an education and awareness program run by the Breast Health Foundation. They employ three Breast Cancer Survivors who visit organizations located in the Townships to talk about the awareness of Breast Cancer and to enhance the education of women in the Townships.
Thousands of women are touched every year through this program who otherwise may not have had information about Breast Cancer. We also have close links with the Helen Joseph Hospital where Dr Carol Benn works (one of the co-founders of the Breast Health Foundation) and also work with the organization Look Good, Feel Better who run an outreach program for cancer patients.
