Israel Centre South Africa will be hosting a laid back discussion on Aliyah. If you feel that the Expos are too intimidating and merely the thought of looking into this topic makes you feel dizzy, have no fear! This talk is for you. And what’s more...we’ll talk you through it.
Let’s start at the very beginning, a very good place to start: when you read you begin with ABC when you Aliyah you begin with: ‘what’s innit for me?’ Very good question. What’s in it for you, is what’s in you already. That little nudge about you and Israel: why you, why now?
There are many factors coming into play. We discern between the two major groups: the pulling factor and the pushing factor. The pulling factors, which are referred to as the positive factors, are the reasons you want (and even need) to settle in Israel. This one is easy: You’re a Jew - that explains the heart ‘tug’.
Israel has become a fully fledged First World country, pioneering ground breaking technology in all fields, you name it: Medicine, Agriculture, Communications etc. – do you like the bit of excitement you feel right now? That is the head validating the heart. But wait, there’s more! South Africans that settled in Israel over the last 60 years have played a major role in this development.
Let’s get to the ‘push’ factor. This refers to the factors that nudge you out of your current situation which in our case will be in SA (we’ll leave it to you to fill in the gaps). Good, so we have a healthy balance: head and heart, push and pull.
Now that we’ve established where this tugging and nudging come from, let’s see how we can help you to put the puzzle pieces together. Come to the talk and find out more about the unique and special benefits South African Olim are entitled to. Also come test out our red carpet – you’ll feel like a VIP.
Red Carpet flights take care of the scary hairy urban legend called Israeli bureaucracy. We replace red tape with a red carpet. But that’s enough talk. We’ll put our money where our mouth is, which includes your free ticket to Israel, initial finances to get you started in your first year, free ulpan, free job search especially for Olim etc.
Let us know how many friends you are bringing along for the chat. Call us at 011 645-2528/60 or email to anneri@israelcentre.co.za. The session starts at 19h00, Tuesday, 16 February at the Beyachad, 2 Elray Street, Raedene.
Aliyah- Pulling and
Aliyah- Pulling and pushing.by way of
I read a beautiful idea on this concept in the name of the brilliant and holy man of God, R. Bunim of Peshicha. He explains the verse "Draw me, we will run after You" (Shir Hashirim 1;4).
When aquiring an animal there are two types of meshichah (a means of aquisition by means of pulling). The first is when the purchaser call the animal and it follows him. The second is when he strikes it with a stick, and it runs before him. Each of these methods is considered an aquisition by way of meshichah. The only difference is that in the first one, where the "pulling" is effected by way of calling, the owner walks in front and the animal follows; while in the second one, where the "pulling" is effected by way of striking, the animal walks in front and the owner follows.
Which type does the animal prefer? The meshichah by way of calling, of course, becuase the animal feels no pain. The meshichah by way of hitting, on the other hand, hurts, and the animal suffers the pains of the blow.
We are in the same position befor the Holy One, Blessed be He, regarding the call to return to Eretz Yisrael. If we heed God's voice that calls us to return to our Land, then we will personify the aspect of meshichah by way of calling. We will not suffer any pain or afflictions. Rather, we will go eagerly without any external corcion. Hashem will lead us, and we will follow.
If, however, we will not strive to make Aliyah willingly, and we will wait until the staff comes and strikes us, the meshichah will be in the form of hitting.
We will suffer the agony and pain of the staff of our "hosts" until they force us to run before Hashem to Eretz Yisrael.
Has the above concept not been proven to be true during the long cruel exile.
Dear Choni, We agree whole
Dear Choni,
We agree whole heartedly! Thank you for your comment. Indeed may the pull factor be predominant over the push factor, and may all truly heed to the 'pull' when it indeed calls from within!
We also urge people that (pardon the pun) 'push comes to shove', that they have their unabridged birth certificates ready for that rainy day. It can take op to 6 months, so please please please go and apply still THIS week (even if you are not even contemplating Aliyah).

We agree whole heartedly!Thank you Choni. We wish for the pull factor to always be predominant over the push factor. And may all respond to the pull factor when it calls from within.
We do urge everyone though to get their unabridged birth certificates of all family members ready for that rainy day when (G-d forbid) push comes to shove (pardon the pun!) It can take up to 6 months to get it processed, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE apply for it at your nearest Home Affairs before the end of the week even if you are not even contemplating Aliyah. It's quite a painless exercise.
